Folded Architecture for Modular All-optical Switch

Optical switches are necessary for achieving reliable, fast and flexible modular communication means in future systems. Free space approaches are advantageous since they fully use the two dimensions optics offer. A folded architecture based on a polarization code is proposed for optical switching. The suggested system is compact and appropriate for both intraand intercomputer communication. The modularity of this architecture is presented, and a growth rule for the reduced state versions of the system is proposed. In particular, a 4×4 and 8×8 reduced state switches are presented, as well as a non reduced (rearrangeable non blocking) 4×4 switch.
